Why is it so important to clean out your makeup bag?
Whether you wear makeup regularly or just on the odd occasion, a makeup bag is an essential for any woman. However, your products and the bag itself can easily become dirty and full of bacteria! The cleanliness of your cosmetic makeup bag may not be something you think about, yet it’s so important to clean it out to ensure that you aren’t harming your skin by using dirty or old makeup products. Here are my top three tips to clean out your makeup bag.
Makeup brushes come into contact with your face, so it’s especially important that you keep these clean! Bacterial buildup on your make up brushes can actually cause breakouts and even skin irritation. Cleaning your cosmetic brushes is one of the most important things you should be doing. Many makeup brands have products available to help you do this thoroughly. However, using warm water and a tiny amount of shampoo can also work well. Make sure you allow your makeup brushes plenty of time to dry out. If you use makeup brushes often for concealer and foundation, then you should aim to wash your beauty brushes at least once a month. If you wear makeup everyday then once a week is preferable to keep them clean and to keep your skin healthy.
Surveys show that while the average consumer owns about forty makeup products, only about five of them are used on a daily basis. As a general rule, when clearing out your makeup bag, if you find a product you haven’t used in about six months then I would advise you throw it away. If it hasn’t been used for a while it means that it’s taking up space in your bag and could even be damaging to use. Unlike food, makeup products don’t have to have expiration dates written on them, but it doesn’t mean that your makeup products can’t go bad. Mascara has been described as a ‘breeding ground for bacteria’ and should be disposed of after three to six months. Using mascara that you’ve had for too long can even cause an eye infection!
After cleaning your makeup brushes and throwing away all those beauty products you no longer use or are out of date, you now need to make sure you are keeping them in a clean environment. Taking care of the cleanliness of your makeup bag is crucial to ensuring that your cosmetic products and brushes are clean. If you have a cosmetic bag made of cloth then you can pop it in the washing machine or give it a quick hand wash using some soap and warm water. Again, it’s important to let it dry thoroughly after being washed. If you have a plastic makeup bag, you can use a wet wipe to give your bag a quick scrub.
